Dressed to Kill, A New Uniform for American Education

By Glen Reaux

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, is implementing sweeping changes and reforms to the nation’s education policies.  Some of these policy changes have brought about an end to protections for students and accountability mandates levied against for-profit colleges.  Other policies limit student relief for fraudulent loans perpetrated upon unsuspecting students by some of these very colleges like DeVry Education Group.  Secretary Betsy DeVos’ policies provide a new look, uniform and code of conduct for America’s education system.

What is the reasoning behind the reforms implemented by the most controversial, wealthiest and feared Education Secretary in modern times?   A thorough look behind the curtain of Mrs. DeVos’ dressing room is required to understand the background from which she selected the tools used to construct the new policy garments for her Department of Education uniform.    The outward appearance of this new uniform aka changes in education policy is striking terror into the hearts and minds of educators, parents and students on all fronts.

Secretary DeVos does not have a degree in education or any teaching experience.  She has never attended a public school and her education stems from Holland Christian High School, a private school.  However, she did donate $9.5 million dollars to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

The first amendment of the constitution establishes the separation of church and state which means that our national system of education is secular in nature.  The secular nature of our education system guarantees that there will be no religious bias or prejudice in education.  Other laws have been passed by congress and Supreme Court rulings have guaranteed an integrated and equal education for all American citizens and residents.  Secretary of Education Mrs. Devos has sworn to uphold the laws and the constitution of the United States.  However, Mrs. DeVos’ 2001 comment listed education activism and reform efforts as a means to “advance God’s Kingdom” is in direct contradiction to the first amendment.   Mrs. Devos believes that the American education system should be a privatized market place where public school dollars are siphoned off to support privately owned corporations that would control the education of our children.  This is a system where profits for stockholders are the ultimate goal of education funding and more important than providing a high quality education of our children.

DeVos served as chairwoman of the board of Alliance for School Choice, she headed the All Children Matter PAC to promote school vouchers and tax credits to businesses that give private school scholarships.  In 2008, All Children Matter was fined $5.2 million in Ohio for illegally laundering money into political campaign funds. Her other activities on behalf of public-school reform have included membership on the boards of directors of the Advocates for School Choice, the American Education Reform Council, and the Education Freedom Fund.  She has chaired the boards of Choices for Children, and Great Lakes Education Project (GLEP).  All of these organizations and at least a half dozen others associated with DeVos under the guise of right-sounding philanthropic names have advocated the privatization of our American education system.  On May 22, 2017 DeVos announced that the Trump administration was offering the most ambitious expansion of public policies designed to fund private schools with public money in American history.

From behind the DeVos curtain, other policy garments for the new Education Department uniform include the suspension of Obama administration rules meant to protect students attending for-profit schools.  Several Obama administration policy memos issued by John King and Ted Mitchell in an attempt to “create a student loan servicing environment that provides the highest quality customer service and increases accountability and transparency for all borrowers, while also limiting the cost to taxpayers were also undone by DeVos.  In May 2018, DeVos, reduced the size of the team investigating abuses and fraud by for-profit colleges from about twelve members under the Obama administration to three.  She also appointed Julian Schmoke a former dean of DeVry Education Group as the head of the team. The investigations into DeVry, Bridgepoint Education and Career Education Corporation were stopped.  A series of payments were then made by DeVry to the DeVos Foundation.

Seventy two guidance documents of the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services which outlined the rights of disabled students under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and the Rehabilitation Act were revoked by DeVos in 2017.  Other policies to prevent discrimination based upon race, ethnicity and gender have also been dismantled.

Secretary of Education Betsy Devos has given the Department of Education a new uniform and mission based upon an ideology of monetizing our education system for a corporate takeover, minimizing the rights of ethnic and disabled students and fostering corporate corruption.  These actions have dressed the Department of Education in an outward appearance that causes emotions of fear and angst among teachers, students, parents and the general public.  These are emotions that do not offer a bright future for education but one of despair.  Thanks to Betsy DeVos our Education Department is now dressed to kill America’s future.
